HOW LONG WILL I WALK AWHILE?
Although our Lady B should take up no more than 90 minutes of your precious time – she welcomes curious minds and a question from an inquisitive fellow wanderer may add an additional minute or several to your walk.
REMIND ME OF THE COST?
A ticket will cost £12.
AND as a welcome to THE original Chocolate Box City, Scarboro’ and beyond – The Polite Tourist is delighted to offer York Carers, Delegates, Students, and Members and Veterans of HM Armed Forces a PERK on any of our walks.

I HAVE BOUGHT A TICKET BUT NEED TO CANCEL – WHAT DO I DO?

HOW ACCESSIBLE ARE YOUR WALKS?

Although we are confident that this policy will offer information about our walks in which to make an informed decision – comments and suggestions are always welcome!
BUT WHAT OF THE WEATHER?
As Ranulph Fiennes once famously quipped that “There is no such thing as bad weather only inappropriate clothing.” – sturdy shoes, umbrella, cosy waterproof clothing and a cheerful disposition should be just the ticket!
However, if you want to make sure that you are fully prepared – why not take a quick look at our weather apps for York, Scarboro’ Leeds and Glasgow on this website?
ARE DOGS ALSO WELCOME TO WALK AWHILE?
Of course!
WOULD YOU OFFER A PRIVATE WALK FOR A GROUP?
Absolutely!
Message us by email to hello@politetourist.com or by Whatsapp or Signal to @PoliteTourist.
Our telephone number is 07485 216628.
ARE THERE ANY GHOSTS?
As the City of York is home to many ghosts and is arguably one of Europe’s most haunted cities – we cannot promise you that during our walk some mischievous spirit or restless soul will NOT make their presence known!
And as for the unquiet streets of Scarboro’ and beyond – who knows?
WHY ARE YOUR WALKS NOT SUITABLE FOR THOSE UNDER THE AGE OF 12 YEARS?
As our walks share the untold tales of long forgotten folk with their real stories of tears, heartache and tragedy including suicide and murder – we believe that young people of an impressible age may struggle emotionally with the telling of these stories.
Our meticulously researched stories of ordinary folk with their lives woven into the rich fabric of a varied and challenging social history are also not for those of a sensitive nature.
AND WHAT ABOUT MY CONCERNS OVER CORONAVIRUS?
In this brave new world we now find ourselves in – The Polite Tourist Limited is committed to providing an enjoyable AND safe experience for our clients.
And in these uncertain times – those considering taking a walk with us may understandably have concerns about their health and safety.
However, we hope that our Public Health Policy will offer a note of reassurance.
WHO OR WHAT IS THE POLITE TOURIST?
The Polite Tourist offers true crime walks through Victorian history. Through York, Scarboro’ and beyond.
Innovative, meticulously researched and inspired by true crime stories from the Victorian era and through the tales of those ordinary people woven into the rich fabric of an ancient city or town’s social history – our walks are designed to offer an informative and unique experience with a professional and spirited storyteller.
You can also discover our unique ‘Yorky Grit’ in our Etsy Emporium AND there is some rather attractive and sustainable gift wrap available too!
Our unique forum Beneath Thy Feet also welcomes those with an interest in our walking tours.
BENEATH THY FEET? I’M CURIOUS!
Our forum has been created for our fellow wanderers to quench those unanswered questions, appease the curious and dispel gossip from truth for as Walt Whitman once said ‘Be curious, not judgemental’.
And if, the tales of the Lady Brigante have ignited your fascination and riddled with curiosity a question remains unanswered or you are somewhat feeling piqued after your walk – let’s talk!
We ask all who wish to join Beneath Thy Feet to open a registered account.
There is no charge and your details remain safe in accordance with the terms of our Privacy Policy.

I’M INTRIGUED- WHY THE NAME OF ‘DEATH IN A CHOCOLATE BOX’?
The City of York is as synonymous with chocolate as the Queen is to the City of London and our city with her glorious Minster, quaint medieval streets, green parks and sandstone castle turrets has often been described as a ‘Chocolate Box’ and as our walking tours share the tales of the extraordinary deaths of those ordinary folk – the name of Death in a Chocolate Box all but suggested itself!
However, with exciting plans afoot for the true crime Victorian history walk experience to move to Scarboro’ and beyond – we have taken the decision to bring Death in a Chocolate Box under the care of The Polite Tourist Limited.
One company. One brand. One ethos.
And hopefully, less adminstration!
We remain proud of Death in a Chocolate Box and we are confident that its unique and spirited passion will continue to blossom within The Polite Tourist family.
BUT JUST WHO IS THE LADY BRIGANTE?
Although, the Lady Brigante loves nothing more than shocking unsuspecting folk with the tale that she was abandoned at birth by gypsies and raised en famille with kindly mice in the crypt of an old church – alas, the truth is altogether more unremarkable for the Lady B was in truth raised in genteel affluence in the ancient City of York.
Described as the bête noire of the long forgotten dearly departed – our storyteller, the Lady Brigante is a spiritual sleuth, sometime artist and a seeker of the dead.
She is also a sometime artist.
For curious minds who are mindful to eavesdrop on the creative musings from an artist’s atelier or eager to discover the mysteries hidden within the Brigante Vault and the unquiet graveyards with their secrets of the long forgotten – why not cross the threshold to a little slice of the web to which the Lady B has since laid claim?
